Ladies' Choice 1
Winifred Godfrey and Theodore Gall
Gall, a sculptor from California, was my selection for Ladies’ Choice because of his attention to detail and the high quality of his work. Our work together represents two different sensibilities.
Ted’s work is three-dimensional, figurative, strong and masculine. It is personal and thought-provoking. The material he uses is steel and bronze with painterly finishes. The small figures, plants and animals that are included in his intricate bronze heads leave the impression of a narrative waiting to be interpreted by the viewer. His work is fascinating and expertly crafted.
My work on the other hand is two-dimensional, large and based on plant forms. It is quite literal with the emphasis on the sensuousness of the surface. I focus on the play of light and translucency within delicate flower petals and yet emphasize the abstract form of the flower. The paintings are based on my interpretation of the natural world.
What Ted and I share is a love of surface and attention to detail. In my work I respond directly to the natural world while Ted creates a fantasy world within the imagination. I was delighted that he would join me for this exhibit.”
